Background: Paraneoplastic syndromes often cause endocrine, neurological, cutaneous, and hematologic pathologies, and cases with digestive symptoms as prominent cases are rare. Case Description: A 1-year-old child admitted to the emergency department with severe abdominal distension was later diagnosed with sacrococcygeal yolk cystoma with ulcerative colitis. After symptomatic management, surgical removal of the tumor, and JEB chemotherapy, the symptoms of ulcerative colitis disappeared completely. After 7 years of follow-up, the child grew and developed well, and there was no recurrence of tumor and ulcerative colitis. Conclusion: Yolk sac tumor with ulcerative colitis is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome with complex clinical manifestations.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the usefulness of vas deferens noncontact laparoscopic high ligation of the hernia sac in children with indirect inguinal hernia (IIH). Materials and Methods: The clinical data of 146 male children with IIH treated in the Anhui Children's Hospital from January 2018 to June 2019 were analyzed retrospectively. There were 82 patients in the observation group in which the inner ring opening was sutured and closed using the vas deferens noncontact suture and 64 patients in the control group in which the peritoneum at the inner ring opening was closed using the intradermal suture. The operation time, surgical complications, postoperative complications, and recurrence rate were compared between the two groups (followed up for 2 years). Results: The operation was successful in all the patients in both groups. In the observation group, there was one case of intraoperative spermatic cord vascular injury and one case of infra-abdominal wall vascular injury, and no intraoperative complications occurred in the control group. The operation time was 12.8 ± 1.4 minutes in the control group and 10.4 ± 2.6 minutes in the observation group (P < .01). The two groups of patients were followed up for 2 years, and no complications and no recurrence occurred. Conclusion: The vas deferens noncontact laparoscopic high ligation of the hernia sac to close the inner ring opening has several advantages: The operation is simple; the operation time is shorter than the traditional method, avoiding the possibility of vas deferens injury; and it is a safe, reliable, and effective surgical method. However, due to the small number of clinical cases in this study, its long-term effect requires further observation.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of Xianfang Huoming Decoction (XHD) improving sperm motility in mice with asthenospermia (AS). METHODS: Thirty normal BALB/c mice were randomly divided into six groups, blank control, AS model control, low-dose XHD, medium-dose XHD, high-dose XHD and levocarnitine + vitamin E (LC+VE). The AS model was established in the latter five groups by injection of methotrexate at 0.5 mg/kg once a week, and the mice in the blank control group were injected with the same volume of normal saline, all for 8 weeks. From the ninth week, the animals in the blank control and AS model control groups were treated with PBS at 0.1 ml/d, those in the low-, medium- and high-dose XHD groups with XHD at 7.13, 14,2 and 28.52 g/kg/ d respectively, and those in the LC+VE group with LC+VE (30:1) at 0.55 g/kg/d, all for 4 weeks. Then, the bilateral epididymides were harvested from all the mice for preparation of a sperm suspension and observation of the total numbers of sperm and motile sperm. The testis tissues were obtained for to determination of the expressions of Nrf-2- and HO-1-related mRNA and proteins by fluorescence staining, RT-PCR and Western blot. RESULTS: Compared with the AS model controls, the mice treated with low-, medium- and high-dose XHD showed dramatically increased sperm concentration (ï¼»22.36 ± 16.02ï¼½ vs ï¼»39.04 ± 4.50ï¼½, ï¼»40.76 ± 6.57ï¼½ and ï¼»41.04 ± 8.39ï¼½ ×106/ml, P < 0.01) and motility (ï¼»22.89 ± 14.96ï¼½% vs ï¼»47.98 ± 4.74ï¼½%, ï¼»48.53 ± 6.03ï¼½% and ï¼»49.31 ± 6.24ï¼½%, P< 0.01), decreased level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (ï¼»16.82 ± 14.96ï¼½% vs ï¼»12.08 ± 3.26ï¼½%, ï¼»10.77 ± 2.21ï¼½% and ï¼»9.56 ± 2.08ï¼½%, P< 0.01), and up-regulated expressions of Nrf-2- and HO-1-related mRNA and proteins in the testis tissue (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Xianfang Huoming Decoction inhibits the development of oxidative stress by up-regulating the expressions of Nrf-2- and HO-1-related mRNA and proteins in the testis tissue, which has provided theoretical evidence for its clinical application in the treatment of asthenospermia.

Seed longevity, the maintenance of viability during storage, is a major factor for conservation of genetic resources and biodiversity. Seed longevity is an important trait of agriculture crop and is impaired by reactive oxygen species (ROS) during seed desiccation, storage and germination (C. R. Biol., 331, 2008 and 796). Seeds possess a wide range of systems (protection, detoxification, repair) allowing them to survive during storage and to preserve a high germination ability. In many plants, 1-cys peroxiredoxin (1-Cys Prx, also named PER1) is a seed-specific antioxidant which eliminates ROS with cysteine residues. Here we identified and characterized a seed-specific PER1 protein from seeds of sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.). Purified NnPER1 protein protects DNA against the cleavage by ROS in the mixed-function oxidation system. The transcription and protein accumulation of NnPER1 increased during seed desiccation and imbibition and under abiotic stress treatment. Ectopic expression of NnPER1 in Arabidopsis enhanced the seed germination ability after controlled deterioration treatment (CDT), indicating that NnPER1 improves seed longevity of transgenic plants. Consistent with the function of NnPER1 on detoxifying ROS, we found that the level of ROS release and lipid peroxidation was strikingly lower in transgenic seeds compared to wild-type with or without CDT. Furthermore, transgenic Arabidopsis seeds ectopic-expressing NnPER1 displayed enhanced tolerance to high temperature and abscisic acid (ABA), indicating that NnPER1 may participate in the thermotolerance and ABA signaling pathway.

The immature embryo culturing capacity of maize is crucially important to maize improvement by transgenic approach. The hereditary variation regularity of maize embryo culturing capacity is not very clear yet. The research aims to study the relationship between inheritance and immature embryo culturing capacity of maize inbreds. By culturing immature embryos of 22 maize inbreds, embryonic callus induction efficiency and regenerating plant efficiency were analyzed with cluster analysis method. And the genetic relationships of 22 inbreds were analyzed using 14 SSR primers with good polymorphism. Results showed that 22 inbreds were classified into three groups. The average embryonic callus efficiency and regenerating plant efficiency of the inbreds with good culturing capacity were 85.0% and 86.7% respectively. The average embryonic callus efficiency and regenerating plant efficiency of the inbreds with middle culturing capacity were 41.3% and 53.1% respectively. The average embryonic callus efficiency and regenerating plant efficiency of the inbreds with bad embryo culturing capacity were 2.14% and 2.75% respectively. 22 inbreds were clustered based on 110 polymorphic loci and classified into 4 genetic groups based on GS (genetic similarity) = 0.75. The consistencies were 91%, 82% and 91% for the clustered results of the single character (embryogenic callus efficiency and regenerating plant efficiency) and both characters respectively. t test showed that immature embryo culturing capacity was significantly different between different genetic groups. Therefore, the immature embryo culturing capacity could be correctly estimated by polymorphic loci from the 14 SSR primers. The clustering method by the SSR provided a basis for forecasting and selecting the immature embryo culturing capacity of maize inbreds.
